The Japanese Local History Association was founded in 1950 as an academic association and has since played a central role in establishing close links between researchers, scholars, curators and historians, as well as academic organizations specialized in local history studies all over Japan. Our aim is not only to conduct research, but also to find, collect and archive lives of the general public in local communities, which could easily be hidden behind the scenes of official national history.

We now practice a variety of activities such as an annual conference, lecture symposia, and study tours in order to carry out the aims. The annual conference is held in and around Tokyo and in other cities in turn, in order to increase the members' understanding of the Association, both in Tokyo and its peripherals, and in other parts of Japan. The annual conference last year (2003) was held in Hachinohe City of Aomori Prefecture, up north of Japan. This year's (2004) will be held in Takasaki City, in Gunma Prefecture, from where you may travel to Tokyo in two hours by express train.
