Local History World Wide - How to do it?

Here are some ideas to get you thinking about the possibilities which local history, with an international perspective, opens.

Who?

The easiest is perhaps to cooperate with a local history association with which your local town or region has a formal “friendship”. Such institutional frameworks usually support the kind of cooperation projects you may want to start. However, do not let yourself be restricted. The important thing is that the cooperation works well, and that both partners find it interesting and useful.

What?

  • Identification of sources: identify sources which may be of interest to your partner. Perhaps you can visit them, and they can return the visit. The sources can be e.g. genealogical or related to trade.
  • Find a topic and compare: e.g. the implications of the first doctor, the railway or the black plague.
  • Exchange best-practice relating to e.g. presenting local history in publications or in schools.
  • Cooperation projects between schools. This could include e.g. exchange programs. Such programs could perhaps include e.g. language or literature classes.
